Vinyl and laminate look similar on a showroom floor and are built from entirely different materials. That difference decides almost everything that matters later: what happens when water gets underneath, how the floor ages, and whether a damaged section can be replaced or has to be lived with.
We do not publish a national average price per square foot for either, because installed cost swings on subfloor condition, underlayment, room complexity and local labour more than on the product. What follows is the material difference and what it costs you in decisions.
The core is the whole argument
Laminate is built on a wood-based core, typically high-density fibreboard, with a printed decorative layer and a wear coat above it. Vinyl is a polymer product throughout, whether that is a flexible sheet, a rigid plank with a composite core, or a solid vinyl core.
Wood-based cores swell when they absorb water and do not return to shape. That is not a quality problem, it is what fibreboard does. A polymer core does not absorb water at all. Everything else in this comparison is a consequence of that one sentence.

Rows one and three are the trade. Laminate usually wins on scratch resistance and loses badly to water. Vinyl usually wins on water and dents more easily. Neither is better; they fail differently, and the right question is which failure your house is more likely to produce.
What “waterproof” is actually claiming
There is no federal definition of waterproof flooring. The word describes the plank, not the floor, and the distinction is the one homeowners lose money on.
A polymer plank can sit in water without changing. The assembled floor still has seams, a perimeter gap at every wall, and a subfloor underneath. Water that reaches the surface will find its way beneath a floating floor and sit on the subfloor, where it does the damage a waterproof plank was supposed to prevent. Nothing about the plank rating addresses that.
Treat the word as a description of one component. The questions that matter are what the warranty actually covers, for how long, and specifically whether it excludes water reaching the subfloor or standing for a defined period. That is written down, and it is more informative than the word on the box.
The indoor air question, and the label that answers it
Laminate cores are composite wood, which puts them inside a federal emissions regime. Under Title VI of the Toxic Substances Control Act, the EPA regulates formaldehyde emissions from hardwood plywood, medium-density fibreboard and particleboard, and from finished goods containing them. The stated purpose is to reduce formaldehyde emissions and the exposures that follow.
The consumer-facing part is a label. Since 22 March 2019, regulated composite wood products have had to be labelled as TSCA Title VI compliant, certified by a third-party certifier recognised by the EPA. That label is the thing to look for, and its absence on a composite-core product is a reason to ask questions rather than to assume.
This is a documentation check, not a scare. The regime exists precisely so the answer is printed rather than argued about, and a reputable retailer will produce it without hesitation.
Deciding, in three questions
- What is the realistic water exposure in this room? A bathroom, a laundry, a basement or a house with dogs and children points to a polymer core. A bedroom or a formal living room rarely does.
- What is the wear exposure? Grit tracked in from outside scratches; furniture and dropped objects dent. Entry halls and kitchens face the first, quieter rooms the second.
- How long do you intend to keep it? A floor you expect to replace with the kitchen in seven years is a different purchase from one meant to last twenty, and it changes how much the upper specifications are worth.

Questions readers actually ask
Is vinyl always the safer choice near water?
For the plank itself, yes, because a polymer core does not absorb water while a wood-based core swells permanently. For the floor as a whole, no. Water still travels through seams to the subfloor. Vinyl buys you a plank that survives a spill, not a room that survives a leak.
Does laminate off-gas formaldehyde?
Composite wood products can emit formaldehyde, which is why EPA regulates them under TSCA Title VI, covering hardwood plywood, MDF and particleboard and the finished goods made from them. Products sold since March 2019 must be labelled as TSCA Title VI compliant and certified by an EPA-recognised third-party certifier. Ask to see that label.
Which one scratches less?
Laminate generally resists surface scratching better, while vinyl generally resists dents and impact better. Grit is the main scratching agent in most homes, so a doormat and a regular sweep affect the outcome more than the choice between the two categories does.
Can I put either one in a basement?
A polymer-core product is the usual answer below grade, because concrete slabs carry moisture. The real work is the slab: test it for moisture, follow the manufacturer’s requirements for a vapour retarder, and keep the installation instructions. Skipping that voids most warranties regardless of which product goes down.
