Most shower-versus-tub advice is written in resale dollars. We are not going to do that, because no federal source publishes a resale premium for either choice, and the figures that circulate come from trade surveys rather than measurement.
There is federal data on something more consequential, and it points the decision somewhere different: this is the most dangerous room in the house, and the fixture you choose is where most of that risk sits.
What the injury data actually says
The CDC reported that in 2008 an estimated 234,094 non-fatal bathroom injuries were treated in US emergency departments among people aged 15 and over. Falls accounted for 81.1 percent of them, and 68.3 percent of injuries occurred in or around the tub or shower.
Those are 2008 figures published in 2011 and we are not updating them, because a newer national count of this kind is not available and inventing a 2026 number would be worse than citing a dated one honestly. What the data establishes is a proportion rather than a trend: the bathing fixture, not the floor generally, is where the injuries concentrate.
That reframes the decision. The question is not which fixture returns more at sale. It is which fixture the people living in this house can enter and leave safely for as long as they intend to stay.
The federal standard that does not exist
There is no mandatory federal slip-resistance rule for adult bathtubs and showers. The voluntary standard that once covered slip resistance in adult tubs, ASTM F462, was withdrawn in 2016.
So a product marketed with a slip-resistance grade is not citing a federal requirement, and any lettered traction scale presented as an official rating is not one. Texture and finish are still worth asking about; just treat the answer as a manufacturer claim rather than a certification.
What CDC does recommend is concrete: grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower, and next to the toilet. That is a specification you can hand a contractor, and it costs very little at the point of construction.
Reinforcing now, bars later
The most useful thing to take from accessible-design practice is a sequencing point rather than a dimension. HUD’s Fair Housing Design Manual, addressed to covered multifamily housing and not to single-family code, treats the reinforcing inside the wall as the item that goes in during construction. The bars themselves come later, when and if they are wanted.
That is exactly the right shape for a private remodel too. Blocking behind the tile costs almost nothing while the wall is open and is expensive and destructive to add afterwards. Ask for reinforcing at the tub or shower surround and beside the toilet whether or not anyone currently wants a bar there.
