Luxury vinyl plank is sold on two numbers and a word. The numbers are total thickness and wear-layer thickness. The word is waterproof. Only one of the three predicts how the floor will look in ten years, and it is not the one on the front of the display.
What the wear layer actually is
The wear layer is the clear film on top of the printed pattern. It is measured in mils, a mil being one thousandth of an inch, so 12 mil is 0.012 inches. It is the only thing standing between foot traffic and the photograph that makes the plank look like wood.
Once it wears through, the pattern goes with it and the damage is permanent. Vinyl cannot be sanded and refinished the way solid wood can. That is the whole reason this number matters more than total thickness, which mostly buys rigidity, sound and a bit of comfort underfoot.
What that number does not come with is a published performance scale. ASTM F410 defines wear layer as an optical thickness measurement between 0.0004 and 0.1 inches; it assigns no service life, no traffic class and no waterproof rating. The Resilient Floor Covering Institute describes wear layers as varying by application and budget, and names commercial-grade options without attaching numbers to them. There is no government or trade-body table saying a given mil figure is right for a given room, and any chart presenting one as a standard has invented it.
So the honest use of the number is comparative, not predictive. Between two planks of the same construction, more wear layer is more material over the print film, and that is a real difference. It does not translate into a number of years, because the years depend on grit, traffic, pets, cleaning method and whether anyone uses a doormat.
The useful move is still to spec by room rather than by house. An entry hall, a kitchen and a room with a dog take more abrasion than a bedroom, so putting the heavier wear layer where the grit is and a lighter one where it is not is a sensible allocation. That is a judgement about your rooms, not a rating anyone publishes.
One caution about the surface treatment marketed above the wear layer, often described as a ceramic bead or enhanced coating. It affects scratch resistance at the very surface. It does not add mils, and it does not change what happens once the wear layer is gone.
Waterproof is a claim about the plank
There is no federal definition of waterproof flooring, and the word is doing less work than it appears to. A polymer core genuinely does not absorb water. The assembled floor still has seams at every plank and a gap at every wall, so water on the surface reaches the subfloor and sits there.
So the plank survives and the room may not. What tells you where the manufacturer actually stands is the warranty: how long it runs, whether it distinguishes residential from commercial use, and what it says about standing water and about damage to the subfloor. That document is specific where the marketing is vague.
Read the exclusions before the headline term. Most warranties also require installation to the manufacturer’s instructions, including subfloor moisture testing, and non-compliance is the usual reason a claim fails.
Rigid core, and the emissions label worth checking
Rigid-core planks are usually described as stone-composite or wood-composite. The wood-composite variety puts a wood flour component into the core, which is worth knowing when checking documentation.
Where a product contains regulated composite wood, the EPA regime applies. Under TSCA Title VI the agency regulates formaldehyde emissions from hardwood plywood, medium-density fibreboard and particleboard and from finished goods containing them, and since 22 March 2019 those products must carry a TSCA Title VI compliant label certified by an EPA-recognised third-party certifier. Ask which core you are buying and ask for the documentation; a retailer who cannot answer either question is not the right supplier.
Underlayment is the other specification hiding in a product description. Planks sold with attached underlayment are quieter and more forgiving of minor subfloor variation. Planks without it need one specified separately, and using the wrong type can void the warranty.
What to ask before buying
- The wear layer in mils, stated separately from total thickness. A quote giving only overall thickness has omitted the number that predicts wear.
- The warranty length and its residential and commercial ratings, in writing.
- What the warranty excludes, particularly standing water, subfloor damage and installation not following the instructions.
- The core type, and if it contains composite wood, the TSCA Title VI documentation.
- Whether underlayment is attached, and if not, exactly which type the manufacturer requires.

Questions readers actually ask
Is a thicker plank a better floor?
Not for wear. Overall thickness buys rigidity, quieter footfall and tolerance of small subfloor imperfections. Surface durability comes from the wear layer, which is a separate number measured in mils. A thick plank with a thin wear layer will show traffic paths early.
What wear layer should I buy?
Match it to the room rather than the house. Manufacturers publish their own positioning, and it varies between them. RFCI describes wear layers as varying by application and budget rather than mapping to a published traffic class, so treat any tiering you are shown as that supplier’s marketing rather than as an industry standard. Entry halls, kitchens and rooms with dogs justify the upper band; a guest bedroom rarely does.
Can a worn wear layer be refinished?
No. Once the clear layer wears through, the printed pattern beneath it is exposed and the plank cannot be sanded and recoated the way solid wood can. That irreversibility is the reason to spend on this number rather than on the marketed surface treatment above it.
Does waterproof mean I can flood the room?
No. It describes the plank, not the installation. Water reaches the subfloor through seams and the perimeter gap, and it can sit there. Check what the warranty says about standing water and about subfloor damage, because the word waterproof has no federal definition and the warranty does have specific terms.
