Plenty of pages recommend “APA-accredited online clinical psychology doctorates.” That combination does not exist for a fully online program, and once you know why, most of those recommendations fall apart.
The American Psychological Association’s Commission on Accreditation accredits doctoral programs in health service psychology. Its implementing regulations address distance education directly, and the position is that a doctoral program in health service psychology delivered substantially or completely at a distance cannot be accredited.
That makes your first check a simple yes or no. If a clinical psychology doctoral program is fully online, it is not APA-accredited as a doctoral health service psychology program. Any marketing combining “fully online” with “APA-accredited” is describing something that does not exist.
Why accreditation is the gate
APA CoA accredits on the order of 440 doctoral programs. Compare that with how many programs are marketed to prospective students and you learn something on its own.
It works as a gate because of what comes later. State licensing boards, internship matching and many employers reference accredited training, so a doctorate obtained outside that route can close options that are difficult to reopen. The consequence lands years after enrollment, when the sunk cost is at its highest.
Boards set their own requirements, so the authority on what your state will accept is that board, not a program’s admissions office and not this page. Ask the board before you enroll, not after you graduate.
Language to check against the directory

Legitimate programs usually land in that last category. That is why “is it online?” is the wrong question; ask “is this specific program accredited?” Hybrid delivery is not automatically excluded. Substantially or completely distance delivery is.
What you can do at a distance
People searching for online doctorates usually have a real constraint: where they live, a job they cannot leave, or someone they care for. The accreditation rule does not make that constraint go away.
Two options deserve a separate look. Master’s-level routes into counseling and related licensed practice have their own accreditation bodies and their own delivery models, and they are separate BLS occupations from psychologist with different entry requirements. And hybrid doctoral programs exist. Skip the question of whether any coursework is online. Ask whether that specific program appears in the APA CoA listing, and what the residency or in-person requirement actually involves in weeks per year. You can check both.
How to verify a program, step by step
- Find the specific program in the APA CoA listing by name. Not the university, the doctoral program.
- Confirm the accreditation status and its date, distinguishing accredited from any preliminary or contingent category.
- Ask the program, in writing, what proportion of the doctorate is delivered at a distance and what the in-person requirement is.
- Ask the state licensing board where you intend to practice what it requires of a doctoral program.
- Check institutional accreditation separately in the federal database, as described in our note on verifying accreditation.
Most people call the licensing board last. Call it first. The board decides whether your training qualifies you, and boards differ. Cost and completion data for any institution involved is in online degree cost and outcomes.

Is the university being accredited enough?
No. Institutional accreditation and APA programmatic accreditation are separate, and APA CoA accredits programs rather than universities. A properly accredited institution can host a doctoral program that does not hold APA accreditation, so check the program specifically.
