Online clinical psych doctorate: what APA accreditation changes

A doctoral health service psychology programme delivered substantially or completely at a distance cannot be APA-accredited. That makes the decision a single yes or no, and it makes one marketing phrase impossible.

Educational information drawn from federal labour and education statistics. Not career, academic or admissions advice.

The article this replaces recommended online clinical psychology doctorates and described them as APA-accredited. That second claim is not possible, and the recommendation rested on it, so the premise had to go rather than be softened.

The American Psychological Association’s Commission on Accreditation accredits doctoral programmes in health service psychology. Its implementing regulations address distance education directly, and the position is that a doctoral programme in health service psychology delivered substantially or completely at a distance cannot be accredited.

So the decision this article exists to inform is a single yes or no. If a clinical psychology doctoral programme is fully online, it is not APA-accredited as a doctoral health service psychology programme. Any marketing combining “fully online” with “APA-accredited” is describing something that does not exist.

Why the accreditation is the gate, not a preference

APA CoA accredits on the order of 440 doctoral programmes. That number is small relative to the volume of programmes marketed to prospective students, which is itself informative.

The reason it functions as a gate rather than a nice-to-have is downstream. State licensing boards, internship matching and many employers reference accredited training, so a doctorate obtained outside that route can close options that are difficult to reopen. The consequence lands years after enrolment, when the sunk cost is at its highest.

Boards set their own requirements, so the authority on what your state will accept is that board, not a programme’s admissions office and not this page. Ask them before enrolling rather than after graduating.

Language to check against the directory

What the marketing saysWhat to do
“Fully online APA-accredited PhD or PsyD in clinical psychology”Treat as disqualifying on its face. A substantially or completely distance doctoral HSP programme cannot hold that accreditation.
“Accredited” with no body namedAsk which body. Institutional accreditation is a different thing from APA programmatic accreditation, and a programme can hold the former without the latter.
“APA-accredited university”APA CoA accredits programmes, not universities. Check the specific doctoral programme.
“Online coursework with in-person components”This is the category worth investigating properly rather than dismissing. Verify the specific programme in the APA CoA listing and confirm what the in-person requirement actually is.

Row four is where honest programmes sit, and it is the reason “is it online” is a worse question than “is this specific programme accredited”. Hybrid delivery is not automatically excluded; substantially or completely distance delivery is.

What is genuinely available at a distance

Being fair to the question behind the search: people asking about online doctorates usually have a real constraint, whether that is geography, employment or care responsibilities. The constraint does not disappear because the accreditation position is what it is.

Two things are worth separating. Master’s-level routes into counselling and related licensed practice have their own accreditation bodies and their own delivery models, and they are separate BLS occupations from psychologist with different entry requirements. Those are covered in our note on what a psychology degree leads to.

And hybrid doctoral programmes exist. The question to ask is not whether any coursework is online but whether that specific programme appears in the APA CoA listing, and what the residency or in-person requirement actually involves in weeks per year. That is a factual question with a checkable answer.

The verification, in order

  1. Find the specific programme in the APA CoA listing by name. Not the university, the doctoral programme.
  2. Confirm the accreditation status and its date, distinguishing accredited from any preliminary or contingent category.
  3. Ask the programme, in writing, what proportion of the doctorate is delivered at a distance and what the in-person requirement is.
  4. Ask the state licensing board where you intend to practise what it requires of a doctoral programme.
  5. Check institutional accreditation separately in the federal database, as described in our note on verifying accreditation.

Item four is the one people leave until last and should do first. The board decides whether your training qualifies you, and boards differ. Cost and completion data for any institution involved is in online degree cost and outcomes.

Keith is not a psychologist and this is not admissions, career or licensure advice. It is a description of the accreditation position and where to verify it.

Questions readers actually ask

Is there an APA-accredited fully online PhD in clinical psychology?

No. APA CoA’s implementing regulations provide that a doctoral programme in health service psychology delivered substantially or completely at a distance cannot be accredited. A programme advertising both fully online delivery and APA accreditation as a doctoral HSP programme is describing a combination that is not available.

Does it matter if my doctorate is not APA-accredited?

It can matter a great deal, because state licensing boards, internship matching and many employers reference accredited training. The consequence appears years after enrolment when changing course is expensive. Ask the board in your intended state what it requires before you commit.

What about hybrid programmes with some online coursework?

Those are a different case and worth investigating rather than dismissing. The exclusion applies to substantially or completely distance delivery. Verify the specific programme in the APA CoA listing and ask in writing what the in-person requirement is in practice.

Is the university being accredited enough?

No. Institutional accreditation and APA programmatic accreditation are separate, and APA CoA accredits programmes rather than universities. A properly accredited institution can host a doctoral programme that does not hold APA accreditation, so check the programme specifically.
